Plot Summary

A traveling huckster passes through Mayberry with a man he claims to be Clarence Earp, the grandnephew of Wyatt Earp. Clarence puts on a show, living up to his name by bullying everyone in his path. Then, when Andy realizes Opie is impressed with the showman's belief that "a man who can fight is a man who is right," he steps in and offends Clarence, who challenges him to a duel. Andy wins by choosing a book as his weapon, proving Clarence is an imposter by checking the Earp family tree.

Odd Facts Known by Few

  • Actor Keith Thibodeaux, billed as "Richard Keith" in 7 TAGS episodes, started playing drums at the age of two. He began touring the United States at the age of three and ended up in Hollywood, California, auditioning for Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball's popular comedy "I Love Lucy". He landed the role of Little Ricky. While attending the University of Louisiana, Keith joined a mainstream rock band, "David and the Giants" as a drummer, singer, and songwriter. He left the band several years later but after Keith became a Christian, the band regrouped under the same name and went on to become one of the nation's top contemporary Christian bands. Keith and the band toured the world, recording more than a dozen albums before he left in 1989.
  • Actor Pat Hingle is one of only two actors to appear in all of the first four Batman movies. The other was actor Michael Gough who played "Alfred". In his last appearance as "Commissioner Gordon" in the Batman series, he worked with Uma Thurman, whose first husband, Gary Oldman, succeeded him in the role in "Batman Begins".
  • In this episode the character of Fred Gibson acts like an adopted father towards Clarence Earp, yet in reality Pat Hingle was only two years older than Richard Jury.
