Alberta Nelson (August 14, 1937 - April 29, 2006) was an American television actress. She was born on August 14, 1937, and attended Villa Maria Academy and later graduated from Andrews High School in Willoughby, Ohio. After several dramatic parts in television in the early 1960s, Nelson made five guest appearances on "The Andy Griffith Show" and "Mayberry R.F.D." - four of them as Goober Pyle's girlfriend, Flora Malherbe.

Nelson also appeared in seven movies in the 1960s as Eric Von Zipper's girlfriend in the successful American International "Beach Party" series. She is the only person who appeared in all seven Beach Party movies, including "Beach Party," "Muscle Beach Party" and "How to Stuff a Wild Bikini." Nelson played the leather clad "rat pack" biker chick Puss (sometimes also called Alberta and in one film called Lisa), one of the comic villains who dogged the steps of America's sweethearts, Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon.

After her successful girl-next-door stint as Flora on "The Andy Griffith Show" and her comedic career as biker girl Puss, Nelson starred in 1970s "The Wild Scene" as Dr. Virginia Grant, a female psychiatrist. Unfortunately, this role did not live up to the wholesome image of Mayberry's Flora. This and a 1970 appearance on "Love, American Style" would be Nelson's last credited roles.

Alberta Nelson was married 35 years to Herbert Gilman. She passed away in Pennsylvania on April 29, 2006.

Flora Malherbe
The part of Flora Malherbe, Goober Pyle's girlfriend on "The Andy Griffith Show," was played by actress, Alberta Nelson.

About Flora
* "Eat Your Heart Out" - Flora first shows up in the episode "Eat Your Heart Out" (February 28, 1966) as the new waitress in Mayberry who has a crush on Andy Taylor while Goober has a crush on her. Flora's infatuation with Sheriff Taylor complicates his relationship both with Goober and with Helen Crump until he is able to convince Flora that Goober is the fellow for her.

* "Goober's Replacement" - Next Flora offers to take Goober's place at Wally's Service Station when Goober goes fishing in "Goober's Replacement" (March 28, 1966). She is seen at the station wearing slacks, a work shirt with oil rag hanging out the pocket, a service cap and a money changer on her belt, and the comment is made that she looks good in slacks. When Goober returns from his trip, he discovers that Wally and his customers are quite happy with Flora and in no hurry for Goober to resume his duties. He also discovers Flora is more interested in making improvements at the station than she is in romance. It is up to Andy to convince Flora to save her relationship with Goober by stepping down to allow Goober to have his old job back.

* "Emmett's Anniversary","Emmett's Retirement" - In "Emmett's Anniversary" (February 26, 1968) and in "Emmett's Retirement" (Mayberry RFD, Episode 23 March 10, 1969) Flora appears as a friend of Emmett Clark's.

In all four episodes, Flora is shown to be a warm-hearted, slightly naive, young woman who works hard and strives to do a good job both as a waitress and at Wally's. Her warm-hearted naiveté makes her a suitable match for Goober. She is depicted as unselfish as she volunteers to help Goober at Wally's and then steps down from a job she enjoys to save that relationship. She is always helpful; it is Flora who assists Emmett in shopping for Martha when she takes Emmet to meet Bernie the Furrier in Mt. Pilot.

* Memorable Moments - Perhaps Flora's most memorable scenes are in "Eat Your Heart Out" where she swaps plates on two occasions to give a better portion to Andy.

Trivia
* The musical score heard when Flora appears on-screen is "A Summer Place."

* Alberta Nelson also played the role of Barney's admirer Nettie Albright in "The Return of Barney Fife" Episode 176. January 10, 1966.

* Flora's furrier friend "Bernie" in "Emmett's Anniversary" was played by Ronnie Schell.

* At Mayberry events around the country there is a Flora Malherbe tribute artist.

Alberta Nelson is an American television actress. She was born on August 14, 1937, and attended Villa Maria Academy and later graduated from Andrews High School in Willoughby, Ohio. After several dramatic parts in televison in the early 1960s, Nelson made five guest appearances on "The Andy Griffith Show," four of them as Goober Pyle's girlfriend, Flora Malherbe.

Nelson also appeared in seven moviesin the 1960s as Eric Von Zipper's girlfriend in the successful American International "Beach Party" series. She is the only person who appeared in all seven Beach Party movies, including "Beach Party," "Muscle Beach Party" and "How to Stuff a Wild Bikini." Nelson played the leather clad "rat pack" biker chick Puss (sometimes also called Alberta and in one film called Lisa), one of the comic villians who dogged the steps of America's sweethearts, Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon.

Plot Summary
Goober Pyle's girlfriend from the diner, Flora Malherbe, offers to take his place at Wally's Service Station while he's away on a fishing trip. Wally isn't sure about hiring a woman so Goober convinces him to give her a try. When Flora appears at the station wearing slacks, a work shirt, an oil rag, a service cap, and a money changer on her belt Wally's business is better than ever.

Goober returns from his trip to discover that Wally and the station customers are quite happy with Flora and in no hurry for Goober to resume his duties. Wally even encourages Goober to take more time off.

Goober soon discovers Flora is more interested in making improvements at the station than she is in romance and he contemplates leaving Mayberry. Andy steps in to convince Flora to save her relationship with Goober by stepping down to allow Goober to have his old job back.

Goober's Replacement" (March 28, 1966)

When Goober Pyle wants to take some time off from Wally's to go fishing, his girlfriend from the diner, Flora Malherbe, offers to take his place at Wally's Service Station. At first Wally is not sure about hiring a woman and Goober has to twist his arm. However, when Flora appears at the station wearing slacks, a work shirt with oil rag hanging out the pocket, a service cap and a money changer on her belt, the comment is made that she looks good in slacks. Soon business at Wally's is better than ever thanks to the pretty new service station attendant.

When Goober returns from his trip, he discovers that Wally and his customers are quite happy with Flora and in no hurry for Goober to resume his duties. Wally even encourages Goober to take more time off.

Goober also discovers Flora is more interested in making improvements at the station than she is in romance. Goober contemplates leaving Mayberry, and It is up to Andy to convince Flora to save her relationship with Goober by stepping down to allow Goober to have his old job back.
"Eat Your Heart Out" (February 28, 1966) - This episode marks the first appearance of Flora Malherbe, who played Goober Pyle's girlfriend and fellow Mayberrian in four of the color episodes.

Flora is the new waitress at the diner in Mayberry who has a crush on Andy Taylor while Goober has a crush on her. Flora's infatuation with Sheriff Taylor complicates his relationship both with Goober and with Helen Crump. More than once, Flora swaps plates to give Andy the better portion, and on one occasion, flirty Flora follows Sheriff Taylor into the woods.

Andy finds himself stuck in the middle between Goober and Flora. To make matters worse, Helen gets jealous of the attention Flora shows Andy. Finally Andy is able to convince Flora that Goober is the fellow for her.
Mt. Airy Connection
Although Andy Griffith denied it numerous times, the town of Mayberry was undoubtedly based upon Griffith's hometown of Mt. Airy, North Carolina. Andy stated as much when he came home to Mt. Airy for the unveiling of the TVLand statue of Andy and Opie. Even if Griffith had not admitted it, Mt. Airy places and names, and even a Mt. Airy newspaper, showed up on "The Andy Griffith Show" on many episodes.

The part of Flora Malherbe, Goober Pyle's girlfriend on "The Andy Griffith Show," was played by American actress, Alberta Nelson.

* "Emmett's Anniversary","Emmett's Retirement" - In "Emmett's Anniversary" (February 26, 1968) and in "Emmett's Retirement" (Mayberry RFD, Episode 23 March 10, 1969) Flora appears as a friend of Emmett Clark's.

She is always helpful and assists Emmett in shopping for Martha.

* At Mayberry events around the country there is a Flora Malherbe tribute artist.

Flora Malherbe
The part of Flora Malherbe, Goober Pyle's girlfriend on "The Andy Griffith Show," was played by American actress, Alberta Nelson.

* "Emmett's Anniversary","Emmett's Retirement" - In "Emmett's Anniversary" (February 26, 1968) and in "Emmett's Retirement" (Mayberry RFD, Episode 23 March 10, 1969) Flora appears as a friend of Emmett Clark's.

She is always helpful and assists Emmett in shopping for Martha.

* At Mayberry events around the country there is a Flora Malherbe tribute artist.

Alberta Nelson is an American television actress.

* "Emmett's Anniversary","Emmett's Retirement" - In "Emmett's Anniversary" (February 26, 1968) and in "Emmett's Retirement" (Mayberry RFD, Episode 23 March 10, 1969) Flora appears as a friend of Emmett Clark's.

She is always helpful and assists Emmett in shopping for Martha.

* At Mayberry events around the country there is a Flora Malherbe tribute artist.
