Howard Sprague, the Mayberry county clerk, was played by [[Jack Dodson]] (1931-1994), and introduced in season six.

==About Howard==

Howard lived with his overbearing and clinging widowed mother, played by Mabel Albertson. (Mabel was the sister of Jack Albertson, of "Chico and the Man" fame. Jack also made a guest appearance on TAGS in the eighth season episode, "Aunt Bee's Cousin".)

Howard's mother tried to thwart any effort on his part to have a social life, on one occasion feigning illness and disrupting a double date with Andy. She also sought to have Howard blackballed from the Regal Order of the Golden Door to Good Fellowship, a local lodge. Eventually, she remarried and moved to Mt. Pilot, giving Howard a chance to assert his independence. He redid his house in a ludicrous attempt to be a mod and hip bachelor, hanging beaded curtains, buying abstract art, and littering his living room floor with throw pillows. His housewarming party was a crashing bore.

In season eight, Howard was given a love interest in Millie Hutchins, an employee at the local bakery. They were briefly engaged, breaking off the wedding when they realized that they were both too set in their ways.

Howard was a man of many talents: a member of the local barbershop quartet, a championship bowler, a successful and short-lived stand-up comedian, a volunteer Big Brother and the only person to land Ol' Sam, the legendary bass that lived in a local lake. He briefly moved to the island of St. Benedict in the South Seas in an attempt to become a beachcomber before returning to Mayberry, older and wiser.

Along with many of the other cast members from season eight, Howard made a smooth transition to life after Andy, with the spin-off series "Mayberry R.F.D."
The first outsider to move to town, Ellie May Walker, Ph.G(Pharmacy Gal), arrives to help her uncle at Walker's Drug Store. Before long she is faced with adapting to Mayberry ways after refusing to sell Emma Brand , the town hypochondriac, sugar pills.

== Odd Facts Known by Few ==
* According to her diploma, Ellie graduated from Bernard College.
* Ellie's degree was Ph.G and this is an actual pharmacy degree. For example, the [http://www.pharmacy.olemiss.edu/history.html University of Mississippi] originally conferred two degrees: the bachelor or pharmacy (Ph.B.) and the graduate of pharmacy (Ph.G.). Both degrees were awarded to students who completed a two-year curriculum. Students who had four years experience in pharmacy practice were awarded the Ph.G. I'm now 45 and still enjoy re-watching these episodes for the little nuances I never noticed: reactions between the actors, recurring themes or expressions, and subtle dialogue which seems to hint at inside jokes. For my money, The Andy Griffith Show is one of the best shows in the history of television.

* Actor Sir Lancelot was actually born Lancelot Victor Edward Pinard, in Cumuto, Trinidad, West Indies. It wasn't until schooling took him to New York City in 1940 that he discovered a love of calypso music. In a profession where successful artists commonly took names like King Radio or Lord Invader, it was natural for someone named Lancelot to choose the stage name Sir Lancelot. With that name he wrote and performed calypso for movies, live theater, and radio beginning in the 1940's. On the side, he did some acting along the way.
* Actor Harry Dean Stanton was the best man at the wedding of TAGS alum Jack Nicholson. Prior to 1971, he was credited in films and on TV as Dean Stanton so as to avoid any confusion with character actor Harry Stanton. Both of these men appeared in a 1969 episode of "Petticoat Junction". Harry Dean fronts a band called "The Harry Dean Stanton Band" which regularly performs in the Los Angeles area. He sings and plays guitar. The band plays a mix of jazz, pop, and tex-mex styles. The band often plays in Hollywood at 'Jack's Sugar Shack'.
==Plot Summary==
A traveling huckster passes through Mayberry with a man he claims to be Clarence
Earp, the grandnephew of Wyatt Earp. Clarence puts on a show, living up to his
name by bullying everyone in his path. Then, when Andy realizes Opie is
impressed with the showman's belief that "a man who can fight is a man who is
right," he steps in and offends Clarence, who challenges him to a duel. Andy wins
by choosing a book as his weapon, proving Clarence is an imposter by checking
the Earp family tree.
