I would love to see write up here done by Mayberry Fans telling us all about The Andy Griffith Show. Until then, Wikipedia has a good article that we can link to.

Overview

Mayberry

Mt. Airy Connection

Although Andy Griffith denied it numerous times, the town of Mayberry was undoubtedly based upon Griffith's hometown of Mt. Airy, North Carolina. Andy stated as much when he came home to Mt. Airy for the unveiling of the TVLand statue of Andy and Opie. Even if Griffith had not admitted it, Mt. Airy places and names, and even a Mt. Airy newspaper, showed up on "The Andy Griffith Show" on many episodes.
