Plot Summary

The Mayberry Civic Improvement Committee entertains ideas on how to spend the $1,200 it has in its treasury. The members decide to erect a statue to the town's greatest benefactor, Seth Taylor, Andy's great-great-grandfather. After the monument is built, Andy learns that Seth was nothing more than a selfish swindler. There is a bright side, however: if it wasn't for Seth's profiteering, Mayberry might have become a busy, crime-ridden place like Mount Pilot.

Odd Facts Known by Few

  • Daniel Lawson was Mayberry's first Indian Agent when he started a trading post that grew to a township of 1800. (Mayberry's population at some point was 1800 but we know Mayberry was around before the Civil War so when the population was 1800 isn't known.)
  • Actor Dal McKennon appeared in the Elvis movie "Clambake".
  • Dallas "Dal" McKennon (July 19, 1919 - July 14, 2009) appeared in one episode of The Andy Griffith Show. He provided character voices for a variety of cartoon series throughout his career. For Walter Lantz Productions, he was the voice of both Buzz Buzzard and Wally Walrus, the two main nemeses of Woody Woodpecker. Later he was the voice of Lantz's Inspector Willoughby. On TV, he was the voice of Gumby on Art Clokey's "The Gumby Show" and Archie Andrews on Filmation's "The Archie Show". He also played the recurring role of Cincinnatus on the TV series "Daniel Boone".
